Virtual mapping to remote server not working

I am having an issue with a W2K3 server running IIS6, we have 2 virtual directories that map to 2 folders on a different W2K3 server running SQL 2005. Things had been working fine but all of a sudden we can no longer resolve the pdf files when looking at the virtual directories via IIS on the web server. Also when in IIS and you right click one of the remote files the Open and Permissions are grayed out? We dont have this problem with local files only the files on the 2 virtual directories mapped to the other server.

Our customers come to our web site to view pdf manuals via their browser, this setup has worked for years until two days ago. BTW everything else of the web site is working except customers are unable to open a pdf, we get a 500 error. All other web & database functions are fine.

This is a pki enabled web site and we have anonymous authentication enabled using IUSR_MachineName account. SSl and 128 bit encryption is required.

In the "connect as" dialog box for this virtual connection to the remote host folder we use a local user account, this same account has been created on the other server and we have the same password setup there. Everything has negotiated fine for several years until two days ago. We do it this was because we dont have a domain or access to create a domain account.

I have checked permissions on the directory and all is good there. Also the password for this local user on the web server keeps getting locked out after a few tries of trying to access the remote virtual directory contents. I have reset the passwords to make sure they match several times but still the same thing?

I am at a complete loss as to why this is happening, we didnt make any configuration changes but yet something is causing this to happen. My question is has anyone else had something like this happen?, if so how did you fix it? and is there a better way to do this rather than using a local user account setup on both machines?

Any help is greatly appreciated as we are in dire need of resolving this!

thanks!

Marc
