old IIS7 configuration on new 2k8 R2 server. Nothing works! 503 error

Here's the scenario...

The HDD died in my old webserver (win 2k8/IIS7/MySQL5.1/PHP5.4), but I managed to get the inetpub directory and the mysql database directory and have copied them to my new webserver which is Win 28k R2.  So it is 64-bit, I think it is IIS 7.5.
I've added the IIS role to the server and have restored all folders from the old inetpub directory into the same location on the new server.
I've also copied the MySQL databases into the correct location.

I copied the most recent applicationHost.config from C:\inetpub\history\xxxxx to C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config and restarted IIS and all 11 websites are now listed and "seem" to have the same configuration (bindings, default documents etc.).   There is however, what seems to be duplicate application pools for each website.

Anyway - whenever I try to browse one of these websites I get the "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable." error and find that the application pool has stopped.
In the events for IIS, there is 5x 5139 warnings (listener channel failure?) and then a 5002 error... for EACH website.

How can I get everything back up and running?

I've tried creating a new application pool for one of the existing sites - no dice.
I also tried creating a new website and added the DNS for it, but even for that I see the 503 service unavailable error.
